For the Love of Mixed Media Blog Hop

I have been dabbling in mixed media art off and on over the past few years. It is something I enjoy but don't always make the time for. One of my goals in 2016 was to change that. Being held accountable is always a good thing, even for your creative process. Collaborating on a blog hop meant that I would not only be held accountable for my piece being finished, it also meant I would find inspiration along the way.

I decided my first mixed media project for 2016 should be something with a Valentine's day theme. I had an ulterior motive. Not too many of our Valentine's day decorations made it with us on the big move. Some were old and not in good shape. Plus, we didn't have much for Valentine's day anyway. After talking things over with my son, he decided to join in on the project as well ( which made me completely happy). Initially, we had planned to buy a few decorations from the store and alter them. After some thought, we felt we should challenge ourselves to use only what we had in the house.

Mixed Media Wire Heart

I am sharing my son's project first because, in many ways, I think his is the best of the two. He was inspired to create a heart out of copper wire.

He cut a heart from cardboard, then cut slits with a craft knife. He then inserted wire into the slits and wound it around the edges to secure it. He was then able to place the heart and wires in the center of a larger wire heart. The cardboard and wire strands in the center served to reinforce the larger heart a bit. He decorated the heart with some wood veneer bits and a locket. The locket was made with a silicone mold and hot glue, then painted red after it dried. He used a lace scrap as the hanger.

The project was easy to make and has a nice rustic feel. It's perfect if you need some quick valentine's day decorations.

Tip: The gauge of the wire seemed to make a difference. I tried a heart with a thinner wire and it wasn't stable. My son did wish his wire was a tad bit thicker.

Valentine Cat Fairy

After seeing several cute cat fairies around pinterest, I determined that I wanted to make one. I had a small wood heart with stand left over from my JBS Mercantile days. I covered it with scrapbook paper and painted the edges with acrylic paint. I printed a largish photo of my cat, Momo, and cut him out.

I made the wing with a silicone mold and hot glue. I left it unpainted, but as you can see from my son's project, the hot glue takes acrylic paint nicely.

tip: The photo I used wasn't the best of my cat. The lighting made him a bit blown out. I thought it wouldn't matter much, but I felt it would have been a better project if I had chosen a great image to begin with.

Ready for some more inspiration?

The wonderful thing about mixed media is that there are no rules about what you can make. Many of the projects shared today were quick and easy. Be sure to  jump around to the other blogs to find more mixed media Valentine's Day inspired projects. There is no particular order to the For the Love of Mixed Media blog hop. Just hop around and enjoy the inspiration.

Scrapbook Mythbusters Pre-LOAD214 Blog Hop

Welcome to the Layout a Day Scrapbook Mythbusters Blog Hop. If this is you first stop along the way, you may want to head over to Kelli's blog so you don't miss any of the pre-LOAD tips. You should have arrived here from Kim's blog.

It's that time of year again! February is fast approaching, which means many of us are getting ready for LOAD 214. What is LOAD 214, you ask. Load stands for Layout a Day. These events occur a few times each year. February being one of those months. Hence the 2. The fourteen simply represents the year. Each time, a different theme is chosen and we strive to create a layout each and every day. This layout needs to be submitted by the stroke of midnight.

Some of you are now a bit intimidated by the thought of creating a layout each and every day. At one point in time, I myself was. I am now a veteran of the process and can proudly say I have completed 2 full LOAD challenges. I have written before about what Layout a Day really has meant for my process. I have a few kits prepped and will be, in a large part, working to use up my current and past JBS Mercantile kits. I'm ready to choose products on a dime and finish pages in under 30 minutes. Yes, that's right...30 minutes.

Most days I allot about an hour to a LOAD layout. Some days I have extra time, however, many days I also need to work on pages for creative team assignments. I have to homeschool my son, keep house, and I still want to spend time with my family. This means I have learned just how much time I have to dedicate to LOAD. What does this mean?

1. I have to understand that not every layout I make during LOAD will be super awesome. That's not to say it isn't a good layout. It just means that I need to give myself a little leeway in regards to perfection and must accept the layout as is when the timer goes off. I can always tweak it a bit later.

2. I accept what products I have at the ready and use them on the layout. No shuffling through items. No thinking about whether or not this paper or that embellishment might be better than what I am holding.

3. Nix the fancy techniques. I don't plan on doing things like handstitching or using art supplies that have a long drying time.

4. I like to have some photos ready, but should the photos I  have on hand not fit the days prompt, I am more than willing to explore my computer files. I just make sure to set a time limit on the search. The first photo to catch my eye and make me feel like it can work with the prompt is the right photo for that moment.

Sometimes, all the planning in the world doesn't work out the way you expect it. There are nights when I find myself creating the layout while watching the clock tick towards midnight. Luckily, I have found a few spots in my scrap space where I can take late night photos. The lighting is adequate. I let go of the fact that they will be less than perfect pictures of the layout. You can take a better picture in the morning for you blog. Meanwhile, make sure your camera has fresh batteries.

Most importantly of all, Layout a Day is about having fun. If you would like to join in, there is still time.

Friends Who Scrap Fall Inspiration Blog Hop

Welcome to the Fall Inspiration Blog hop. If this is your first stop and you would like to travel through the blogs in order, head on over to Mandi's blog.

With each changing of the seasons, there comes a feeling of renewal. The falling leaves of Autumn carry with them our memories from the passing year. It's time to be thankful for both the good things and for the challenges that have helped us grow. We can find inspiration both within ourselves and in the world around us. Today, my friends and I are sharing with you a variety of Fall projects to inspire your creative soul. It's up to you to add your own spin on the fall projects with the things you are personally grateful for.

This month, the focus of my Project Life pages has been to document gratitude. No matter how big or small, focusing on my pictures with a thankful heart has put a wonderful spin on both the big events and the everyday occurrences.

It's so easy to get caught up in the regular pattern each week seems to fall into. School, work, days off and then repeat. It's so easy to forget how wonderful your home town can be. I invite you to take a look around and notice the beauty in the place you reside. This past weekend, I paid attention to how wonderful it was to just enjoy the sparkling of the sunshine, the tiny birds at the cafe where we ate lunch were and how everyday activities really can become as wonderful as the biggest event or holiday.

Laughter is a gift. Reflecting on the things that are making your family laugh right now can be a wonderful snapshot of life and gratitude. Currently for us, it's been a silly movie and the antics of my cat. Documenting my husband's job isn't something I do often enough. I used a photo he sent me to document a project he is working on as well as to reflect on how grateful I am that he has a job.

Mixing the daily events of our lives with my thoughts about gratitude has worked well for me. I think that sometimes we make a project more complex than it needs to be. Though being grateful is very important, that doesn't mean it necessarily has to have it's own album. Taking time to reflect on something your are grateful for can be just as meaningful when you add your thoughts to your current memory keeping projects.

Thank you for joining us for Autumn Inspiration. I hope you haven't missed any of the stops along the way. Just in case, here is a list of all of the blog hop participants.

Get It Scrapped CT Blog Hop

Welcome to the Get It Scrapped Creative Team blog hop. I hope you enjoyed Marie-Pierre's post. If this is your first stop today and you want to hop in order, you may want to start at the Get It Scrapped Blog.

A few years ago, I became a student at Masterful Scrapbook Design. I knew I loved scrapbooking but I didn't know a whole lot about page layouts or design elements. I liked my pages, but I wanted something more. I wanted to know why certain layouts appealed to me more than others. I wanted to develop a personal style and to know how design fit in with that style.

The articles and classes at Get It Scrapped were the perfect answer for me. The seminars focused on key concepts while being open minded enough to allow me creative freedom. I participated in live interviews and learned tips and tricks from top designers. All the while, I learned that many of them experienced some of the same thoughts and doubts I had while creating. It has been ( and continues to be) a wonderful experience.

About a year ago, there was a call for Creative Team members. I applied, though I was doubtful I would be selected. When the invitation came to join the team, you can imagine how exciting it was. Today, I am just as excited. Once again, I will be joining a fabulous team of memory keepers!

Just because I am  on a creative team, doesn't mean that my development has stopped. We're all still learning and developing our skills. I  learn a lot through every assignment and blog post at Get It Scrapped.

I was  asked to pick a favorite blog article to share with you. Picking one wasn't easy, but I finally settled on one. Dina Wakely wrote a fabulous article called 6 Ideas for Using Tags on your Scrapbook Layouts .

I don't use tags often enough. The article was a great way for me to use up supplies and break away from my normal supply choices. I love trying new things, especially when it helps me use up those supplies I tend to forget I own.

All Aboard by Christy Strickler Supplies| Cardstock Bazzill; Patterned Paper: My Mind's Eye; Letters: American Crafts, Jillibean Soup; Tags: Sizzix Wood Veneer: Studio Calico; Chipboard, Ephemera, Tape: JBS Mercantile; Other: buttons, trim, staples

Many of the articles at Get It Scrapped will help you use up your supplies while you learn design.

Ready for some more Stash Busting fun? Head on over to Masterful Scrapbook Design Archives. You will learn how to use the scrapbook supplies you have in both creative and practical ways. The goal is to help you use your stash, try new things, and make scrapbook pages you love. We’ve got approaches, inspiration, interviews, and lessons that get you thinking about product and scrapbook pages in ways that get your bins, baskets, and digital folders emptier and your albums fuller.

Scraphappier! The LOAD213 blog hop!

Thank you for joining in the LOAD213 blog hop. If you are arriving here first, you may want to head over to Heather's blog so that you can follow along in order. We have a lot tips, tricks and insight into the experience that is LOAD.

If you are wondering what LOAD is all about, at it's simplest, it's creating a layout a day. You get a prompt in the morning and you do your best to create a scrapbook layout by midnight.Usually when I tell someone I am participating in LOAD, I am often told I must be crazy. Most people will say they can't even consider LOAD since they take a long time to create layouts. They have too much on their plates with kids and family. If you decide to participate in LOAD213, the biggest thing you need to remember is that it's ok if you don't end up making a layout  every single day. Sure it's the point, but it's also not the point.

What's really  the point of Layout A Day? It's a look into your process. It's going to make you take a look at how you work with your supplies and the steps you take to create a layout. You have to understand who you are before you can successfully create every day. Since you have a time limit, you learn to make confident supply choices. There is no saving that paper for a special day when you participate in LOAD. You learn that every day is the special day meant to use your supplies. You also develop a creative habit. Creativity is exercise for the brain. The more you exercise it, the more you create.

It is a good idea to get prepped and ready for LOAD. Personally, I begin editing and printing off sets of photos. Remember that your goal is to create layouts quickly. You probably don't want to choose your wedding photos or anything in which you want to scrapbook with a lot of detail. I like to use everyday photos of my cats or my son, for example. I also gather kits and have them ready to work in a basket near my desk.

Sketches are a great way to save time if you find you hesitate when it comes to photos placement. I gather favorite sketches and keep them on a pinterest board.  I also like to use sketches from some of the challenge blogs out there.

Some days you will have more time to work than others. On the days you have a little more time, you might want to jot down notes about the way in which you are working. Personally, I discovered that I think by object or theme and then color as I work. This is changing how I store my supplies.

Most of all, don't stress out! This is supposed to be fun. Keep stress low by making quick decisions when you choose supplies. If you liked that green polka dot paper with the photo of your kid, don't second guess yourself and keep searching your supplies. Choose and move on. If you don't have a photo for that days prompt, don't sweat it. No one says you can't print another one. Don't limit yourself to the basket of supplies you have ready. If you know the birthday paper on you shelf will work better with the prompt, then go grab it.

Not all of you layouts will be exciting and awesome. Some might need a little love later on to get them looking the way you desire. It's ok.  I created this one during LOAD 212. It could use a little more embellishing.

Once again...just have a good time!

Mother's Day Blog hop,2012

Welcome to the Mother's day blog hop. You should have arrived here from Andrea Joy's page. If you stopped here first or have gotten lost along the way, please pop over the Amanda's blog to get going on the right path.
Mother's hold a special place in our hearts. So do grandmother's. Today I wanted to share a page which highlights the photo of someone who was very special to both my husband and son. Her name was Pat and she is my husband's grandmother. I was very lucky recently to have been given some wonderful photos which feature her in it. This series of photos immediately caught my attention. For one thing, the cute little boy is my hubby. For another, I really loved this photo of  Pat.

Papers from JBS Mercatile April 2012 kit: Pink Paislee and Hambly Screen prints
Alphas: Sassafrass, chipboard: Crate Paper
paper border: American Crafts, mist- homemade
When I received these photos, they were very yellowed. My husband and I discussed at length the quality of different cameras and film over time. Since these photos are special, I made sure to scan them right away. I then touched them up as much as I could in photoshop and printed a set to use on my page. The original will be stored carefully in an envelope which I will attach to the back of the scrapbook page.
We didn't live close to Pat. I really wish we could have. My husband always has such wonderful stories to tell about how she would take him to the toy store or of things they did together when he was younger. On the few occasions she was able to spend time with my son, she captured his heart. He remembers just walking around her property looking at ants and talking with her. She would sit and listen to him rambling on and on. It was something not many adults did, and he really appreciated her for it.If you notice, I have not yet journaled on this page. The story here is my husband's to tell. I hope he has the time to share it with me soon. It will be nice to have his own words on a page, rather than just mine.
Thank you for stopping by and sharing just one brief moment in the life of a great lady. Your next stop on the hop is the blog of a truly talented, young lady( boy does saying that ever make me sound old!). So click your mouse and see what Jordan has to share with you.

Happy Mother's day!!!

Eggs-tavagant Easter blog hop

Welcome to the Eggs-travagant Easter Blog hop. There are a dozen eggs in a carton and so we've chosen a dozen colours to share with you today. You should have started out at Jordan's Blog. If you arrived here first, pop on over there to start your colourful journey.
Egg dyeing is a lot of fun. I could have shared a page about that. I have oodles of photos. However, I have been working on photos of last year's Easter fair and figured I would share some of those. My son made a ton of crafts. My favourite was the sand art bottle. While I loved the bottle itself, what I loved more were the expressions my son made as he created his sand art. He was so serious as he measured and poured the sand.
Sequins, glimmer mist- Oriental poppy
Ribbons- Maya road and Making memories
Studio 18 jewels, Paper trunk alphas

As you can see, my colour for the hop was Orange. the vibrant colour was perfect to highlight the precise pouring action in the photos. Don't be afraid to go monochromatic with your pages. It makes paper choice and embellishing easy as you can choose a wide array of items in various shades of the same colour.
While butterflies might be a feminine embellishment( my son even asked why I had them on this page), I was able to slip them in here. I think of Spring when I see butterflies. Using them in the bright orange also made them less feminine. If you have a son, look for opportunities to use things like butterflies and flowers in symbolic terms on a page.
Now it's time to head off to the next blog in the hop. I am dyeing( pun intended) to see what Lorri has for us! So head on over to Lorri's blog to take a peek!

Coming Soon!

It's just a few days to the Easter blog hop! April 6th will bring a variety of blogs with a colourful array of Spring projects. I hope you will join us!!!

Counterfeit Kit Challenge's May blog hop

Welcome to the Counterfeit Kit Challenge May Blog hop! You should have arrived here from Jennifer C's blog. If you have just found the hop or are lost, head on over to the main page at the Counterfeit Kit Site to get on the right path.
If you are like me, you love Scrappy supplies and getting packages in the mail. Unfortunately,my budget just does not allow for me to purchase various kit clubs and all of their wonderful add ons. That is where the counterfeit kit comes into play. Each month, a kit is chosen and we are invited to do our very best at copying it with supplies in our stash. I admit that I love shopping my own supplies. Participating in this challenge has really helped me see new paper combinations and various ways of extending older supplies to get a new look. The cool part about this challenge is that I can use my kit to play on other challenge sites as well.
This month's blog hop challenge was to choose some inspiration from a manufacturer's blog. It sounds simple enough, but let me tell you, it was actually quite a challenge to narrow down what I wanted to use as inspiration. I finally chose to scraplift a layout from Maya Road's Creative Corner. I especially loved the use of Kraft paper along with the unusual banners at the top of the page.

Deeply Grateful
Page by Karen Grunberg made for Maya Road

One of the first obstacles for me in making my page is that I do not own a scallop edge border punch. I could have opted to cut it on my Cricut, but instead, I chose to trace my own from a piece of shaped chipboard( I keep a few covers from shaped mini albums to use as templates). I used a hole punch and paper piercer to add a little more detail to the hand cut scallops. Paper scraps inked with Colorbox's chestnut roan ink took the place of ribbon. I liked the diagonal flow of the page and chose to add to it with glimmer mist splatters. Buttons and the leftover dots from punching holes in the kraft paper hint at confetti. To make the punched dots a little more interesting, I used a pen to doodle irregular circles around them.

all items from May counterfeit kit except for:
twine from the twinery
K and Co. alphas and stickers
glimmer mist in candy apple red and electric blue

This was my first time making faux stitches with a paper piercer and pen. I will say that I do like the effect and it's a great technique to use if you are short on time or feeling lazy ( like I was). I did use a few items not in my original counterfeit kit. I chose to add in some twine and some K and CO alphabet stickers. These stickers came with some birthday themed hats, presents and cupcakes. The package is a few years old and the stickers were not sticking well. I used glossy accents on them which served to update their look as well as keeping them on the page.
Lately I have been pinning a ton of ideas to my pinterest page. Seeing this completed layout is a reminder to me that using the inspiration I find can make for a wonderful page.If you are ever in a slump, a manufacturer's website can be the perfect fix. Now it's time to hop on over to Michelle's blog. Don't forget...don't just save inspirational ideas for later, find the time to actually use them! Happy Scrapping!

FIRST PRIZE!!!!
As for me, I will also be hosting a challenge. You may find it by surprise, like a pair of roguish eyes... over at sketches for you in the group's forum. Hmmm....sounds like I left you a few hints about my "Spring is in the air" challenge. Now to throw you off just a bit...some people celebrate Bicycle week during the month of May. I have a little challenge going which is all about transportation. We've been heading around the world in 8O layouts, but this month we changed things up a bit. Rather than focus on a country for inspiration, we are focusing on how we get there. Speaking of how we get places, and the month of May...did you know  that this Friday( Friday the 13th) is National frog hopping day? Quirky huh? Kind of like this post! Well, in honour of such a hopping good day, I made this page:
page maps sketch
basic Grey paper
prima flowers with e line pearls
acrylic paint
Studio G stamps
Paper trunk stamps
SEI alphas
handmade alphas
hampton arts flock

Last year around this time, my son and I raised tadpoles. He was like a mother hen( or should I say frog?) in caring for the little guys. We released 30 of them! That's a lot of hopping!

Which leads us back to the Blog hop, as it were. It's time to Hop on to Michelle! Happy hopping everyone! I'll see you over at Sketches for All!

P.S> please don't forget to email your words to: scrapmiep2@hotmail.com

Day 2 of NSD!!!

First off...Happy Mother's Day!!!

It's been nice having so much time to relax and scrap this weekend. I have two more pages to share with you. Also, if you haven't checked it out,Scrapbook Challenges is having an NSD blog hop. You can start the hop here with Brynn's blog. The cool thing is that you too can participate in the hop by completing a Scrapbook Challenges sketch and then linking your blog to the hop. For my sketch, I chose a more current one.
Sketch 252 Scrapbook Challenges
Some items are from my Couterfeit kit for May
Echo park papers
prima flowers
making memories jewels
bread tags-recycled from pantry
recycled note pad cover, cut into circle then stamped with a studoi G stamp
colorbox white and chestnut roan inks
Plum pudding shimmerz spritz
making memories tiny type alphas
K and Co. wood veneer alphas
marth stewart opaque punch on vellum
Orange Bic mark it-faux stitching
I wanted to enter a current challenge while still getting a page completed. I love combining things. I get a lot of challenges done by combing them with others. It can be a challenge in and of itself, but it makes things a bit more fun.Which is why you may see this page at a few spots around the web like BPS, Frosted and Sketches for You. (hint: it will be part of an upcoming challenge over hosted by yours truly at Sketches for You). Since the word roguish means michievous, I wanted fun, playful colours. I paired them with pink and flowers for a feminine tone. My husband snapped this picture of our cat, Sweetpea hiding in the sink. She is always full of mischief but very girly...so I think the page suits her well.
My second page features our other cat, Boo. He is one of those long slinky cats. I call him the contortionist, because he looks folded up when he sleeps. To capture the theme, I used bright colours and circus style papers. The paint and stars remind me of circus paint and clowns.
Sketchy Thursday 5-5-11
Sassafrass papers and borders
white paint
star punch
yellow stickles
My Mind's Eye chipboard frame centers
Colorbok die cuts-arrow and star
I chose to use some leftovers from some My Mind's eye chipboard frames. I wrapped them with thread and used them to frame the circles for a fun pattern.
There is still a little more time to get in on the NSD fun. Don't forget about being part of the Scrapbook challenges blog hop. I am off to try to get a few more pages done...
