Kit It Out with Triangles

I love triangles. I just don't tend to use them a whole lot on my layouts. Time to get outside my comfort zone with Challenge One from the Counterfeit kit challenge. The challenge is to use five or more triangles on a layout. This is the perfect excuse to pull out a triangle stamp from my stash and to give them a workout.

Snuggle Kitty by Christy Strickler |Supplies Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned Paper: Fancy Pants, Basic Grey; Letters: American Crafts; Stamps: Studio Calico, Basic Grey; Tape,Brad: Basic Grey; Ink Ranger< Tsukineko; Die Cuts: Basic Grey, My Mind's Eye; Sticker: My Mind's Eye; Jewels: Doodlebug ; based on the July inspiration piece from Scraphappy.org

My counterfeit kit didn't have any 12x12 papers in it. I chose a piece of kraft and a 12x12 sheet of patterned paper to be my canvas. I cut the kraft paper down to 81/2 x 11 in size. It's not a size I regularly work with and was the perfect way to step farther out of my comfort zone. I chose a piece of patterned paper with triangles in the print. I pulled out my stamps and created a design on two sections of the patterned paper. My inspiration is based on a layout featured at Scraphappy.org.

My kit is full of bright colors. Using the pale pink patterned paper as my canvas along with the kraft cardstock toned the colors down just a bit. The pink visually supports the idea that this cat is full of a lot of love.

While I love my kit, it's been a challenge to get things going. The bright colors and patterns lend to a very graphic design. I am off to search for more pictures that will work well with this kit. I am not sure if I will kill the kit, but I am at least hoping to make a dent in it.

Kit It Out: Counterfeit Kit July 2014

It's been a long time since I have been making my own kits. After reading about making them in the Get it Scrapped's Product Play e-zine, I decided I needed to start making my own kits again on a regular basis. I made my first kit earlier in the month, However, I soon realized that I wanted to make more. I hopped on over to a site I used to frequent quite a bit. It's called the Counterfeit Kit Challenge.

This month, the ladies at the Counterfeit Kit Challenge have chosen a bright kit set against a black background. Once I saw it, I immediately knew which supplies would go into my kit.

A few weeks back, I had picked up the Basic Grey Highline collection. I have yet to crack it open and use it. Pulling it together with all of the embellishments made for a quick kit and now I am ready and inspired to play. Currently, I have plans to use this kit on an assignment for Get It Scrapped. I also feel that this kit will intermix well with the Freshly Squeezed kit I created earlier this week.I will be looking to my supplies, especially my washi tapes, for pops of blue.

Now that it's Friday, it's time to play with my kits. How about you? Are you scrapbooking this weekend?Did you make your own kit?

Tuesday Inspiration- One Day Later

Wednesday is here and I haven't blogged yet this week. Normally, I would have had posts scheduled or I would have blogged on the day of a layout reveal. This week though, my main focus has had to be my son and his homeschool work. Let's just say that I am very proud he wants to learn more about computer programming and  design, however, that whole bit is just not my forte. I end up pretty much taking the class and having him walk me through what he is doing so I can help him troubleshoot. That's kind of like the Guided study Critique class, but I digress. I am supposed to be talking to you today about the latest inspiration piece at Scrapbook News and Review Magazine. It's a Doozy with a capital D!

When I say it's a doozy, it is simply because I believe the image intimidated quite a few people. It's not your usual Pinterest photo and at first glance, you might not have a clue how to use it. I broke down the steps I used to determine what I would use from the image for my layout. My layout looks nothing like the swirling, brightly colored organic shapes in the image. Yet it has several distinct features all found within the image itself.

Oh My!! Look! I Did This... by Christy Strickler Supplies| Cardstock: Colorbok; Patterened Paper: October Afternoon, My Mind's Eye; Alphas: My Little Shoebox; Buttons: Basic Grey: Chipboard: Pink Paislee, American crafts; Mist: Ranger; Die Cuts: SEI; Other: pencil

I used colors and shapes found within the inspiration piece to compose my layout. How would you interpret the image for use on a papercraft project? I hope you will share a project at the SNR magazine gallery.

P.S. Some of the papers used for this layout are also in my October Counterfeit Kit.

Kit It Out- October's Counterfeit Kit Challenge

It's been a long time since I have played along. I have still been making kits, just not necessarily posting them to the site. Summer was hectic. Enough said on that. Anyway, I decided I should start posting and playing along again due to the following reasons:
1. Life has slowed down.
2.My fellow Get It Scrapped DT member , Katie  Scott, is the Featured guest designer.
3.I am taking May Flaum's Kit-tastic class.
4. Due to taking the Kit-tastic class, I wanted to go back to regularly sharing kits on my blog.

I made this kit with a specific photo in mind. I am hoping it works out because it involves dinosaurs and a very large fern. I plan to work with it this weekend. So now I bet you are expecting some boy themed papers with dinosaurs on them. Sorry to disappoint. This kit was about the pattern and the colors for me. I will make the theme work, but not with dinosaur themed papers.

 Kit Contents:
Patterened papers: October Afternoon, My Mind's Eye, Studio Calico
Alphas: Sassafrass
Stickers and Buttons: October Afternoon
Chipboard: American Crafts
Stamp: JBS Mercantile
Die Cut: Scenic Route
Other: Electrical tape

How much of the kit gets used is anyone's best guess. Only time will tell. Stay tuned to the blog! Meanwhile, If you would like to create your own Counterfeit Kit and join the challenge, check out October's Inspiration.

A Slightly Sour Adventure

Last Easter, we took my son to a carnival at a local resort. There were a lot of great games, arts, crafts...and the opportunity to fill the bottle of your choice with powdered candy. What child could resist that?!?! There were a variety of flavors to choose from. Some sweet. Other sour. We advised my son not to choose the sour. He is not much for sour candies. Inevitably, some sour candy was put in his bottle.
I'd like to show you his reaction to the candy. I did photograph it. Not to tease, but, I must say that I loved his reaction! Alas, it's part of my chinese whispers page for Club CK which I can not yet reveal( stay tuned). So for now, I will just share page one with you. I made it for the new CSI challenge group and I used some of the materials from my January Counterfeit kits. At CSI, you get a folder or case file like this one:

Then you use it as inspiration for your page. It's sort of like a recipe challenge. Anyway, it provided a great jump off point for my page. The colours reminded me of the powdered candy. My counterfeit kit had yellow and turquoise papers in it. I felt like I could add some mists and embellishments to warm those colours up and meet the challenge requirements for CSI.

Little yellow Bicycle- tiny alphas and purple glitter alpa

The title was inspired by the idea to document an adventure. The full title reads " Sandy Candy: a slightly sour adventure for the tastebuds."  The idea of using advice in the journaling set the stage for the story I told about my son and the sour flavors.
That sort of odd looking thing under the title...well, it's a mask of sort. I made it from the top of some packaging. It's the part that would hang from a hook. I cut it out a bit more. I am not sure it it counts at the architectural element. It sort of looked architectural to me in an artsy sort of way. Regardless, I sort of liked how quirky it looked. I used this moss coloured glimmer mist which looks more blue green to me than deep green. I know I only really needed two pieces of evidence...but I did manage to get some other items from the evidence list on my page. The circles were cut from a sort of purple sheer ribbon. I hand stitched the swirls and added flowers and gems( my version of stones).

Once again, I have managed to add some of my nemesis colours to a layout. I don't much care for yellow. Pink and purple are hard to get onto boy pages. On this page though, they had a little meaning. This carnival was at a resort hotel. So the yellow and turquoise remind me of the warmth of that day. Those colours, along with the pink and purple, are also colours of the candy. So it all sort of fit together. Adding the black to the page gave it a little masculinity. Overall though, it was the theme of the page that drove me to choose the elements that went on it. Proof positive that a page with a boy can have girl colours and flowers without being feminine.
