Tales of a Craft Class Junkie: Style is Leverage and the Reflective Story Style with Get It Scrapped

Even though I have been scrapbooking for over a decade, categorizing my personal scrapbook style isn't easy for me. I  have found my groove and my process flows with ease( most of the time). I can work with just about any product I am handed, molding them and adapting them to my style with ease. However if you  ask me to name my style? Nope. Not Sure. I know who I am as a memory keeper but the name for that identity sits on the tip of my tongue, sort of unspoken like that whatsamacallit you know but just can't seem to say when people ask you. It's really not a problem for me,unless I am applying for a design team and they want me to define who I am.

Rather than categorize my style, I tend to sit back and observe. What do I do? How do I do it? Why do I do that? Do I need to make any changes? If so, what and why? This isn't about making a comparison of myself to others. This is about leveraging my style. Even if I don't name it, it's still mine and I want to use it effectively. I want to understand the way I use specific supplies. Understanding what I do and how I use products helps me work efficiently but it also points me towards opportunities to expand the way I work.

While I do always journal on a page, I tend to fall into a basic pattern. I have a tendency of capturing the event in it's most rudimentary and factual form. I don't know why this is, other than to speculate that, once the page is finished, I am just so ready to move on to a new design. Now there is nothing wrong with event scrapping and being factual. It's just that I want to do more with the way I tell my stories. I have gotten the chance to examine my story style with a layout I created recently for Get It Scrapped  as well as during the Style is Leverage Event.

All is Well by Christy Strickler |Supplies Patterned Paper Pebbles, Basic Grey,We R Memory Keepers; Crate Paper; Letters: American Crafts; Punch: EK Success; Labels: Evalicious; Enamel Dots: My Mind’s Eye; Die Cuts: Basic Grey: Journal Card: Basic Grey: Other: ribbons; Appears in an article for Get It Scrapped; Based on a sketch from the Simple Scrapper Premium membership

I know I can get a bit lazy when is comes to journaling. Having a prompt helps me out quite a bit. When I created this layout, I started with the idea that I wanted to tell a reflective story and then found the photos to work with that story style. Let's look at this page, for example. These are photos of my husband and myself in the NICU with our son.Though it may not be obvious from these pictures,he was born premature. We were close to going home, but still had a long unknown path ahead of us.I would probably have written a brief explanation of the photos. Perhaps I might have mentioned how worried we were at the time. What did I do instead? I chose to write from my present perspective, telling my former self that I wish I would have known then that everything would be ok. My son grew up just fine with few health issues. It's something that I also wish to tell other parents of premature babies.

This is my second year participating in Style is Leverage. I came back to it, once again, to reevaluate where I am now. I like who I am as a memory keeper, but understanding more about how I tell my stories will give me what I need to move forward in the telling of richer tales. Story telling is definitely an area I want to work on. I personally feel that, no matter what lever or style of memory keeper we are, we can always benefit from taking stock in ourselves. Now for me, it's just a matter of making story telling experiments a habit and not falling too far back into old routines.

Have you ever taken a look at your personal story style? How do you feel about it? Does it convey enough of what you want to tell in your journaling?

Tales of a Craft Class Junkie: Story Play

I have to confess. I haven't been signing up for a lot of classes lately. Both my time and money have to be budgeted right now.  You might have heard me mention in the past month about how our highschool homeschool endeavors are occupying much of my time. There is,however, one class I always make time for...Masterful Scrapbook Design.

This month, Masterful Scrapbook Design is focusing on Story Play. While I know that I choose embellishments, paper and motif with the story in mind, I am still often left feeling that I could do a bit more. After reading through the e-zine, I decided to start off simple. I decided to make my title pop and to focus a bit of the visual story telling side.

Old School Telephone by Christy Strickler |Supplies Patterned Paper: Basic Grey, October Afternoon, Elle's Studio; Letters, Journal Card: October Afternoon; Digital Paper and Embellishments: Down This Road Designs, Echo Park; Template: Fiddle Dee Dee Designs

My efforts to make the title interesting are in many ways considerably a weaker effort than the ideas given in the e-zine. Despite this, I still like my title. I chose to print a schoolhouse die cut from a digital kit. So the title reads Old School Telephone with the word school represented by the image. All of the papers were chosen with care. The base is a ledger print which reminds me of an old address book. The grey paper has wavelengths which remind me of sound traveling. The telephones and number prints are obvious choices for a phone layout.

I still have a ways to go in expanding my own story play. The month might be over, but there is still time to play along. On October 1st, the Scrapbook Coach accompaniment will be launched. I plan to work through each of the story based layouts with the process videos. I am also very excited about the new look book. It will be available in November.

Tales of a Craft Class Junkie: The Scrapbooking World Series

It's safe to say my scrapbook slump has ended. I just wish I had more time to work now that I am inspired to do so. I have really been enjoying the Scrapbooking World Series. I appreciate that it's self paced, other wise, I might just be in trouble. The videos are short and to the point, however, they are chock full of simple ideas to spark a layout. I must also confess that I find it very amusing to see Tami's son narrating scrapbook challenges. I wish him and his team the best of luck in their upcoming games. Meanwhile, how about I share a couple of layouts I have made inspired by the challenges.

Summer SnoCone by Christy Strickler
|Supplies Patterned Paper: Studio Calico, American Crafts, Pebbles, Cosmo Cricket; Letters, Button: Jillibean Soup; Labels: Freckled Fawn, Chic Tags; Die Cut: Chic Tags; Stickers, Flair, Paperclip, Chipboard: Freckled Fawn; Mist: Dylusions; Glitter Glue: Ranger; Twine: October Afternoon; Enamel Dots: Twine and Ink

Layout one started with my choice of product. One item in particular, actually. I had a sno cone flair badge from my Freckled Fawn kit and I was determined to use it. Alas, I could not find any sno cones for my son this summer. It just so happened that I came across this photo of my son when he was three. Perfect. Now my warm up layout was complete.

You & Me by Christy Strickler |Supplies Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned Paper, Die Cuts, Chipboard, Tape: Basic Grey; Sequins: Crate Paper; Wood Veneer: Studio Calico; Enamel Wood Dot: My Mind's Eye; Button: Jillibean Soup

I started layout two listening to the challenge and prompt. I think though, that somewhere along the way, my layout headed out to left field. No worries though. I love the way it looks and am happy to have a page done, despite not exactly meeting the challenge parameters. I used some of my supplies from my July Counterfeit Kit to complete the layout.

As I mentioned, the challenges and prompts are simple. Yet, they offer a bit of a challenge while teaching you a little about baseball. If you are interested, it's still not too late to take on the challenges.

Tales of a Craft Class Junkie: Clustered

The scrapbook Coach classes have done two things for me. One, they have shown me the compositions I regularly use with ease. Two, they give me a direction to work in when I want to change my routine just a bit. The most current class, Clustered, is one that takes me away from my usual routine.

Group Nap by Christy Strickler |Supplies Patterned Paper: Fancy Pants, Studio Calico;Letters: Pink Paislee; Tag, Charm,Stamp: Studio Calico; Ink: Ranger; Twine: Jillibean Soup; Doily, Flair, Bow: Freckled Fawn; Sticker: Hello Forever

I worked through part one with ease. The directions given were easy to use and to adapt to my choice of supplies. I love how the Scrapbook Coach classes give you such clear direction while at the same time allow for creative license with your product choices.

I chose patterned paper with clocks to represent nap time. The wood and floral patterned paper add a cozy feel, as does the doily. I chose to layer my smaller clusters in two parts. First I stamped some small circles. Then I came back and added sprinklings of white glass beads. My tag is a little larger that the one in the sample layout. However, I felt that it sort of blended into the background and that made the size issue negligible.

I enjoyed working through part one of the class. Now I have just three parts to go! Are you working through the Scrapbook Coach series? If so, don't forget to share your work with us in the Get It Scrapped Gallery.

Tales of a Craft Class Junkie: Camp Scrap 2014

I have to admit it. I am a sucker for just about any class taught by May Flaum. I love watching her process videos. May's style of scrapbooking appeals to me. It confirms that a wonderful page need not be centered around product or technique to make it wonderful. So when I saw May was hosting Camp Scrap again, I signed up.

I have participated in Camp Scrap in previous years. As I watch the videos, I am inspired to get creating. It's not always necessarily the same project May is working on. I just feel the need to create and that's a good thing. I do have to confess that I don't always make it all the way through camp. I am hoping this time will be different for me. I'm off to a good start. I have watched the week one videos and I even made a layout.

Catching Raindrops by Christy Strickler |Supplies Cardstock: Bazzill; Patterned Paper; Pink Paislee; Echo Park; Letters: American Crafts; Sticker, Chipboard: Pink Paislee; Acrylic: Freckled Fawn; Other : Glossy Accents; supplies originally from the JBS Mercantile May Kits

This page is based on a sketch May shared in class. I altered the grid design a bit to accommodate the 4x6 picture of my son reaching for a tree branch. I didn't want to crop this particular photo down to a 4x4 size. Despite the changes I made, the layout came together easily. Especially after watching May create two unique layouts from the same sketch.

I didn't go out to buy new supplies for this class. It's my hope that I can work through some of the many kits I already have on hand. This particular layout came together using scraps from the May JBS Mercantile kits.

This summer, I  have limited my class choices in order to focus more on each class. Hopefully this means I am not overcommitted and I can actually finish the classes I have chosen. In addition to Camp Scrap, I will be taking advantage of my Get It Scrapped Membership. How about you? Are you taking any classes this summer?
