The Weekend Update: Scheduling Now In Progress

In life, it's always important to be able to adapt. Changes come quickly. More so when you are a parent. These past few months have seen a lot of changes for me and my family. All good ones. Even good changes require adjustment. I don't mind planning things out a bit, but for the most part, I often find that my process involves a bit of planning mixed in with last minute audibles. I don't work well with too much structure and so, though there is a pattern to each week, it's not a set in stone schedule. For the most part, this works very well. When it comes to blogging and maintaining my goals for the website and as a Scrapbook instructor, this doesn't work quite so much.

I'm still finding my way to a comfortable medium between family time, writing coursework, homeschooling my son and maintaining my hobbies. It's my goal to get some blog posts and website articles planned, written and scheduled on a regular basis. That being said, I think the whole idea of a weekly update might be a bit ambitious for me. So instead, I plan to try a monthly overview with a check in, midway through the month. I am hoping this will allow me to focus more on creating content both for the website and for classes in the next year. I currently am working on three projects behind the scenes. I hope to be able to sneak a few peeks for you in the upcoming weeks.

This month, I have been focusing on Gratitude as so many of us are. I would like to thank all of my readers for joining me as My Scrapbook Evolution transitions into a new realm. Meanwhile, there are a lot of fun and inspiring things in the work that I will be sharing with you this week. Tomorrow, I will be participating in an Autumn inspired blog hop. This hop will feature ideas for Thanksgiving and Fall Papercrafts. Blog hops are always a ton of fun so I figured why not do a second one! On Tuesday, I will be participating in the Get It Scrapped December Story blog hop. If you are still unsure about how to document your December, then you will want to follow along. This week is sure to be filled with inspiration and ideas.I am looking forward to seeing what my friends and fellow design team members have in store.

Welcome, November!

The beginning of November marks a very special time of year for me. I met my husband in the fall and this past weekend, we celebrated our 20th anniversary together. It's hard to believe that two decades have passed. We have both been through so much together and yet, those early days are fresh in both our thoughts.

Many people are celebrating this month by keeping a gratitude journal. I want to do the same, though mine will be incorporated into pocket pages. I spent the first three days of November being thankful for my husband, the years we have shared, and for our son.I will be sharing my gratitude kit with you soon, but first, I wanted to start off the month featuring layouts of a different sort.

Like Prom by Christy Strickler Supplies| Patterned Paper: Anna Griffith, Basic Grey; Letters: My Mind's Eye; Ribbon, Prima; Ink: Colorbox; Wood Album page: Pink Paislee; Other: Doilies, jewels, vellum, buttons
During October, I participated in the Scraphappy.org Layout a Day Challenge. I was very honored to be one of the members chosen to share a sample layout for a prompt. The prompts for this year centered around clothing and trends throughout the decade. The prompt I was assigned featured gold, black velvet and lot of bows. I knew right away that I wanted to use the patterned paper seen here. What I didn't consider was just how reflective the paper was. Getting a decent photo of this layout was sure a struggle!

I did manage to create a layout a day and then some last month. Though I forgot to post my final layout on Halloween, in total, I made over 40 layouts last month. Some were for Creative Team assignments and could not be shared. I had to be very creative in how I handled LOAD.

The next Layout a Day challenge will be in February 2014. I am looking forward to the challenge and I hope to see some of you there. I have also been asked about some of the process videos I created for LOAD. These were some of my first videos ever and in some cases, the equipment did not cooperate as planned. I may share them later if I can salvage them. I have otherwise decided to learn from my mistakes and move forward to provide better content. You will be seeing my first process video this month featuring a layout I created for Get It Scrapped.

Our Honeymoon Adventure by Christy Strickler Supplies| Patterned Paper: Crate Paper, Basic Grey; Letters; Die Cuts, Tag: Basic Grey; Stickers: Skippings 5; Jewels: Freckled Fawn; Flair: Studio Calico; Ephemera, German Foil: JBS Mercantile; Other: Wood tag, vellum

I figured it was high time to try to finish my honeymoon album. I work on it off and on. This layout will be the title page. When I saw the gold foil moon in the October JBS Mercantile kit, I knew exactly what to use it for. I don't have any photos of our actual drive to New Orleans. Instead, I used google maps to get driving directions and then printed the map. It was the perfect way to slip in some geotag stickers, especially since geotags are so trendy right now.

November looks to be a wonderful month. I have set some goals for organizing more of my supplies and photos. Currently, I am in the process of cataloging my current albums and photos scrapped. I have repeat scrapped a few too many photos. I was happy to see that I am only partially behind on Project Life. I have August and September in the works. Hoping to finish October and have November part way done with the Gratitude journal project. I will share this organization system with you in one of my first around the lab posts.

I will also be focusing on color this month with the Masterful Scrapbook Design series. Though I will be working on my gratitude journal, I have plans to also work on the Your December Story class. I want to get some of my cards and pages set up. As always, I have more creative ideas than I may have time for! Do you have any goals for this month? Are you creating a gratitude journal or mini album?

With the Best of Intentions

The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.- Robert Burns

The schedule went way off the rails on Friday. Perhaps it's because it isn't really written down anywhere. It's more of a mental list of the whens, whats and hows. Either way, I came to terms with it and moved onward. It's about being flexible and learning to roll with the punches so to speak.

I have been pondering whether or not to write out a formal website and blog schedule. I always hesitate, given that, once anything is in pen and a date has been committed to, I feel compelled to make sure it publishes on that exact date. Being a mom means that there are no exact anythings some weeks. The only thing you can count on is that you will be adapting in one form or another to a change somewhere in the schedule.

Friday came and I had all the intentions of sitting down to write my weekend update post. We started off on a good foot, but somewhere partway in, my son asked about the upcoming week's schedule and shouldn't we be factoring in a shorter week due to Halloween festivities. His solution was that he would get extra math studies out of the way. Now it's not a common thing in our household for either him or me to be enthusiastic about math. Also, we were in the point of the lessons which required me to teach rather than for him to have a few extra practice problems. I didn't want to curb his enthusiasm for his schoolwork that day and so, the first adjustment of the schedule occurred.

Saturday morning came along. We slept in a bit and then sat around on the couch. Sometimes it's important to veg out a bit after a long week. At some point, we decided to pop out for lunch since it was a lovely day. I took the liberty of playing photographer. We looked at some birds and some boats and by the time we got back home, we had decided to play a video game together. It's a family affair. Once again, I pushed writing the post off.

Sunday came with a repetition of sleeping in and lounging. Somewhere partway through the day, we decided to hop in the car and drive to the grocery store across the other side of the island. My Husband took the scenic route which provided the opportunity to practice shooting pictures from a moving car. Nothing too exciting, but a nice opportunity to just look around and chat. Sunday slipped away and still I hadn't written the post.

Now it's Monday. I could I guess beat myself up for not staying on the allotted schedule. I see people do this all of the time. Not just with blogs, but with photos to scrap or activities to do as a family. Whatever it is, suddenly, it becomes too much and the ability to adapt is replaced with the paralysis of what what has not been done.

Today is all about avoiding the paralysis. Instead of a to do list I have written  a what I have done list. It changes my perspective and now that it's written, I can adapt my what I want to do list. Because when it really comes down to it, we all know the what you need to do and what you want to do lists will always have new items added to the bottom.

The Weekend Update: Tired but Happy

Friday is here. It's been a long week but not bad overall. Good things are happening. Good energy is beginning to flow again. There are things to look forward to and that's always wonderful. While I can't share all the good things just yet, I have tons of things to share with you.

This week has found me and my son wrapping up the first quarter of Fall homeschool. I have been learning to edit a produce videos, so he decided to learn too. It was frustrating. It was fun. We learned a lot. He submitted a video for his report. I edited quite a few for an upcoming class. I still need to load the layout a day process videos I created at the beginning of the month. Boy have I learned a lot about lighting and microphones since the start! This is definitely going to be something I continue to learn and evolve with.

Meanwhile, I have been alternating between composing posts and articles for the website and blog along with working on my next class. It's been a lot of work, but I find myself spiraling into a more creative zone. One article or tutorial begets another and then yet another.

I have managed to keep up with Layout a Day: LOAD in Vogue. I am not sure how, but somehow, I find the time each day to work a layout in for the challenge. I have talked about fitting things all in before. I think Ashli Oliver and I must be in the same boat. It seems many people perceive us homeschool moms as having the ability to scrap all day! Regardless  of whether or not you are a homeschool mom, a SAHM or a working mom, Ashli has started a wonderful blog series you will enjoy reading about the reality of fitting it all in.

Speaking of LOAD in Vogue, I have managed to keep creating all week, though many of these layouts are very simple in nature. It helps me to use a challenge or a sketch. Sometimes both. I don't have time to think too much...just choose the product, place it, glue and keep on scrapbooking.

Love and Memories by Christy Strickler Supplies| Patterned Paper,: My Minds Eye; Tape: Glitz Designs: Die Cuts: Chic Tags; Wood Veneer: Studio Calico; Coloring Medium: Gelatos; Enamel Dots: Freckled Fawn: Other: Brads, Badges; Sketch from Chic Tags

I created this layout using the prompt to document something I had lost. All three of the pets in this photo are no longer with the family, having passed on throughout the years. My dog had jumped into the dining room chair to escape the kittens. They liked to snuggle with him and nap. He had enough, but they found him anyway. The wood prints and soft florals really fit the mood I wanted for this layout. I

Speaking of wood prints, Document Life Workshop has a challenge to use wood or faux bois patterns on your layouts.  If you need additional scrapbooking inspiration for your layout, check out this article about Faux Bois patterns from Get It Scrapped.

This weekend, my goal is to finish off a lot of the projects I have on my plate. I hope everyone out there has a good weekend and that you get a lot of stories documented.

A Very Belated Weekend Update

I can't believe a week has flown past. I had intended to post so much this week. My son's schoolwork waylaid my plans. I would like to say I have many posts typed, edited and scheduled. That's just not always the case. First term for my son's homeschooling is always a bit of an adjustment. Though we school year round, many of the on-line classes center around a traditional Fall schedule. His first term projects are coming due and he needed my assistance. He always comes first.

I am also in the midst of work for upcoming classes, creative team assignments and Layout a Day. So far this month, I have completed over 16 layouts and edited a ton of class content. I am happily keeping up with LOAD and hope to catch up with blog posting and articles for the main website. I have several projects to share for Get It Scrapped and I am looking forward to sharing some awesome projects created with the Fabulous JBS Mercantile October Kits.

Meanwhile, I hope that wherever you are, you are enjoying  wonderful weather. Fall is definitely arriving here in the islands.

The Weekend Update: In the Works

This weekends' post is a sort of hodge podge of ideas. I find myself very inspired right now and in a creative whirlwind. There's lots to do and lots to think about!

Layout a Day is in full swing now. This means  I find myself quite busy  juggling my regular creative team responsibilities, working on new class content, family time, and homeschooling my son. So far I have managed to keep up though I haven't had time to share the layouts yet.

I have been exploring a new way to share projects with you. Last week, my husband helped me make an overhead camera mount. They are very expensive to buy. While poking around the web, I found a video featuring one made from PVC pipe. It cost around $6 for me to make. I was able to attach a web camera using velcro and double stick tape. It did force me to do a major overhaul of my creative space. I have to admit that I am glad it happened. My whole space is so much more usable. I am filming my LOAD layout each day along with new layouts for classes. Currently, I am in the process of editing, doing the voice overs and narrating. I hope to share my first video later this week. I have plans to share my space sometime next month.

Meanwhile, if you are interested in making your own overhead camera mount, you can find the video I looked at here.  She even gives the complete measurements for her camera mount. I did have to adjust mine a bit higher to accommodate my particular web cam. I was able to use a longer scrap leftover from the pipe I bought. Easy Peesy!

Last month, I participated in one of the new Virtual Crops at Scraphappy.org. They are one of the new member perks. I had a blast! If you are like me and don't have a local scrapbooker to crop with, these are a great solution. I am thrilled to announce I will be the hostess this month! The caveat being that you must be a member to participate.  Don't worry though...if you come, you won't have to go on camera unless you want to. I will warn you that a lot of chatting is done and not always much scrapping. Details for the time and links to the virtual crop will be available to Scraphappy members in the member's only area.

Speaking of a whirlwind of creative thought...Creatives will find this article by Debbie Hodge very thought provoking. I am no where nearly as polished as Debbie when it comes to writing. She has captured how I feel about what I do and why I like to do it.Whether you are a hobbyist or a serious artist, you will find yourself nodding along as you read. I plan to send this article to some of my friends the next time they ask why I haven't called to chat or why I like to stay in most nights and weekends.

Places to play this week:
Over at Get It Scrapped, Doris Sander has challenged us to create one Haiku poem a week.  I am already behind but I have plans! I plan to use a few photos this month, add a journal label and then I can place these in my Project Life spreads.

Document Life Workshop offered a challenge to create a layout inspired by an Artist's Color Scheme. After reading the recent Get It Scrapped article about Frida Kahlo, I decided to incorporate some of the ideas into two of my LOAD layouts this week. I invite you to challenge yourself the same way and share it both at Get It Scrapped and Document Life Workshop.

This wraps up my hodge podge of thoughts for this week. I hope you find yourself as inspired as I do right now! Have a wonderful weekend and Happy Crafting!
