Get It Scrapped: Christmas Pages from your Holiday Stash

Like many people, I have tons of holiday photos yet to be scrapped from the days when my son was little. Each year, I try to find just the right papers to document those memories. I watched the release of each new December kit and collection, however, I didn't find any that really wowed me or that fit into my budget. I knew I would be getting a selection of Holiday items in my December JBS Mercantile kit. I also knew I would get a few bits and pieces of holiday stuff from other places such as Freckled Fawn. Meanwhile, I had a large supply of Christmas papers already. So much stuff, in fact, that I still had my holiday kit intact from last year. It was time to put my stash to work.

Millennium Falcon by Christy Strickler |Supplies Patterned Paper: Creative Imaginations, October Afternoon, Crate Paper, Basic Grey; Letters: Amy Tangerine; Tape: My Mind’s Eye; Chipboard: Basic Grey; Enamel Dots: Studio Calico,PinkFresh Studio; Die Cuts: October Afternoon, Elle’s Studio Chic Tags; Sticker: October Afternoon; As seen in an article for Get It Scrapped

I had already been successful in blending a themed paper together with holiday supplies. I decided it work work for this layout as well. My husband had a toy Millennium Falcon when he was a boy. He was thrilled that our son would also have one to play with. I chose a sheet of Star Wars themed paper as my canvas and then began choosing my holiday papers and embellishments. The older Crate Paper line I chose had a bit of light blue in it. It's a fun striped pattern that compliments the playfulness of the page. I chose the red Christmas paper from October afternoon for it's contrast with the blue. It's simple with a distinct holiday design. The neutral grey print houses the photo while pulling a bit of the grey from the striped print upward. I chose to create a shelf from navy washi tape which pulls that darker blue into the upper layers.

Holiday papers often come in the same color palettes which makes it easy to mix and match bewteen collections and manufacturers. You can pull in an additional theme, as I have done here, by simply placing like colors throughout the layers. Just choose one color or pattern as your base, then use the gallon/quart/pint rule as you select additional papers and embellishments.

The DigiScrap Geek Podcast Episode 15: Talking About Planning and Seeing Projects Through.

I am not one to set New Year's resolutions. That being said, I do like to have goals in mind. Most of my goals are short term with the intent to contribute to one long term accomplishment. I know that short term projects or goals work better for me. I get too easily distracted. There are tools I use to help me see my way forward. Many of those tools are part of my membership to Simple Scrapper. Jennifer Wilson is wonderful at helping you to simplify your goals and make them achievable. I have known Jennifer for over  a year now and I was delighted to have her join us on the latest episode of the DigiScrap Geek Podcast. We talked a lot about what works and doesn't work to achieve project planning while on the show. I thought I would share a few of my own personal goals.

During 2014, I managed to get my scrapbook stash more organized. I did so by doing small organizational projects each month. I now have a workable space and can find supplies so much easier. I scrap a lot faster now that I am not constantly searching for stuff. Of course, my space still needs some tweaking. In 2015, I plan to continue my small organizational efforts knowing that there will be a big reward at the end. I would also like to do things to make my space pretty as well as functional.

I was very satisfied with my scrapbooking efforts during 2015. Looking back, I can now see times of the year in which I became tired or lost interest in it for short time spans. These time frames seem to be seasonal and often seem to occur after other big events in my life. Generally, those events involve homeschooling. In 2015, I hope to be able to schedule my time a little better so that I don't wear out creatively.

Project Life is something I love but which sometimes falls by the way side about half way through the year. I stopped sometime around April or May. I don't necessarily feel behind. However,I do have a desire to finish those pages and keep it going in 2015. I like my month in a recap version of Project Life and plan to continue that. I plan to use Traci Reed's 2015 Life Planner to help keep my thoughts organized. I know I forgot things about each month last year that I am sorry I missed. This planner will help me keep everything organized even if I can't scrap that month right away.

In 2014, I had a long list of older supplies and tools which I wanted to make more use out of. The list was so long and it was sort of a running joke. Having the list wasn't a bad thing. Having a huge list was. This year, I want to use older tools but will approach things differently. I will choose one or two tools and techniques per month to focus on.

I am really looking forward to 2015. I have a lot of exciting content to share with you. Meanwhile, the organizational bug has bitten me and it's time to get back to work. Enjoy the last few days of 2013! Happy New Year!

A Last Minute Holiday Sign

I haven't dedicated a lot of time to holiday crafting this year. At least, not until my son finished this year's homeschool term. Now that I have a bit of free time, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to use up some holiday supplies. I have seen so many cute projects featuring burlap and since I had a sheet in my JBS Mercantile Artisan kit, I figured I would start with that as my foundation. I chose to work with one of my Deflecto acrylic frames. They are essentially ready made decor just waiting to be embellished.

The burlap sheet is made by American Crafts. It has a cardstock base already attached. This is an advantage. It saves the step of having to line the burlap so that the frame doesn't show through. It also keeps the burlap stiff which makes it easier to work with. There is no odd stretching or shifting of the cloth. I did add a little adhesive to the center before laying it on top of the frame. This makes it easier to create even folds on both sides of the frame.

Since the burlap sheet is a bit stiff, I folded the sides back and forth a few times before adhering it to the frame.

I also found it necessary to cut a small slit on each side of the frame base. The slit makes it easier to fold and adhere the burlap. I went ahead and wrapped the base of the acrylic frame with the burlap. I didn't want to worry about hiding a cut line and I also didn't want the sign to sit unevenly.

I used hot glue to adhere the burlap to the frame. Now, it's simply a matter of decorating the sign.

Holiday Sign by Christy Strickler |Supplies Burlap: American Crafts; Die cuts: Crate Paper, Elle's Studio. Flowers: Prima; Button: Jillibean Soup; Clip: Crate Paper; Plastic Animal: Maya Road; Stencil, Glitter: Tim Holtz; Texture Paste: Weni Vecchi; German Foil: JBS Mercantile; Other: Doily, Ribbon; Frame: Deflecto

After adding a little texture paste with a stencil, I sprinkled the wet paste with glitter. You can't see it here, but it does have a nice, subtle sparkle.I used bits and pieces from My JBS Mercantile kits( 2013 and 2014) along with a few things from my stash to complete the sign.. I began working on it late last night and finished it this morning. Not bad for last minute crafting!

I am hoping to have more time to craft over the coming days as my son enjoys playing with his presents and seeing his friends. I hope you enjoy your holiday and get a little crafting in too. Happy Holidays!

The DigiScrap Geek Podcast: Geeking out about Photos with Episodes 13 and 14

These last few recording of the Digiscrap Geek Podcast have flown by. This is in large part due to the great time we were having talking together. Of course, as memory keepers,we all love to talk about our photos. The two most recent episodes definitely cover this topic well.

Protecting our photos is something we all want to do. In episode 13, We met with Mary Moseley and learned quite a few tips and tricks to photo storage. Since talking with Mary, I have backed up my photos onto two separate hard drives. I am also in the process of posting them to cloud based storage. If you want to get inspired to back up those photos, this episode is the one for you!

I have been a long time admirer of Katrina Kennedy's work. I was ecstatic to be able to speak with her in real life. To be honest, I have been in a sort of photo rut lately, not sure about what photos to take or how to see everyday situations from a new perspective. All I can say is Lesson Learned. When in a photo rut, Katrina's website is the perfect place to go. It's packed with tips and ideas for getting your photography to a whole new level. I plan to join the Project 365 community and try out some of the photo tips every week.

Two more wonderful podcasts shared and  now I have new personal goals to achieve for the new year. I am already part way through to achieving my goal of keeping my photos protected. Now, just to improve my photography skills just a bit.

We should have another episode up soon. Just to let you know, we will be taking a bit of a break for the holidays and we will resume sharing podcasts with you in 2015! If there is a topic you would like to see, feel free to leave a suggestion in the comments here or on the DigiScrap Geek Podcast website.  Thank you all for listening to the DigiScrap Geek show!

JBS Mercantile: The Last Mid Month Update

Normally, when I receive my design team assignments or my kits, I jump in wholeheartedly. This time, it was different. My goal had been to go out with a bang for my  last month as a JBS Mercantile Kit Club Designer. The mail thwarted me a bit, causing my kits to come after the first of the month release. So I set them aside. Really, I procrastinated big time.

The procrastination had to come to an end. Today, was to be my final post about the paper kits on the JBS Inspiration Blog. Still, I had a hard time getting going. Finally, I chose a Page Maps Sketch and threw myself into the project. Once I had the sketch, it was easier for me. I am not sure it's my best ever layout for JBS Mercantile. Still, I loved the title and the way I used the ampersand paper.

And So This is Christmas by Christy Strickler |Supplies Patterned Paper: Elle's Studio, My Mind's Eye; Letters: Elle's Studio;Die Cuts, October: Elle's Studio; Metal: Jillibean Soup; Enamel Dots: My Mind's Eye; Other: tickets, doily; Based on a Page Maps Sketch; Linking up to the Paper Issues Punctuation Challenge.

I might be sad about this being the last scrapbook kit for JBS Mercantile, but I am also very happy for Jenni. She is following her passion and I am very excited to see where that leads. Working for Jenni Bowlin Studios has given me a love of vintage fresh. I expect that JBS Mercantile will still be my go to supplier for those rare and wonderful items. I have made a lot of friends through the JBS Mercantile site and I look forward to keeping in touch with all of them. Meanwhile, December isn't over which means I still have a little time left to play with my kits and hopefully share the results.
