Game On! It's March and That Means It's Time to Play Calvinball!

First things first. I need to explain what Calvinball is to anyone who is new to it. It's a scrapbook related game created by my freinds, Doris Sander and Celeste Smith. The game is based on the Calvin and Hobbes cartoon. It involves an ever changing set of rules and just all of us, having fun. There is no prize. The goal is to get us scrapbooking more. The easiest way to explain it all would be for you to stop by the Get It Scrapped Forums. The details are all there.

Now technically, the game started March 1st. I know...we're 4 days into the month. That however, is part of the beauty of Calvinball. With the rules changing and morphing( and you having the ability to add more rules), the outcome is never certain and even those who start a bit late are still guaranteed to have a chance at a high points total.Plus, it's just plain fun. If it makes anyone feel better, I am getting a late start this year.

It you need encouragement and want to know more information, then it might be easy to just talk to some Get It Scrapped members live and in person. It just so happens that the Get It Scrapped March online crop is this Saturday( tomorrow). I plan to attend and I know many people there will be happy to help you get started with Calvinball. You can learn how to join the crop here. It's free. You just need to register with the Get It Scrapped Forums to gain access. Registration is also free.

Game On! The Last Day to Play

The last day of the month is both an ending and a beginning. Many of the submissions for crafty games and challenges must be complete by tonight. New games and challenges will post tomorrow and in the coming week. As with all challenges, I set my goals high. I wanted to do all of my design team work and then make projects for every challenge that inspired me. That's a bit unrealistic and obviously, there was not enough time to do all of the creating that I desired. Making time to create is partially about the planning. It's also about taking opportunities when they come along. This morning, I found myself with about an hour to play. It was just enough time to finish up one more layout for the month.

When time is short, you grab the closest supplies to hand and work with what you have. On my desk were remnants of  a kit collection featuring papers about books and reading. I have worked on a couple of layouts this month about my son's reading habits through the years. I must admit that it felt good to use up so much of that reading themed paper. Why not make another page about books? After all, I knew where I had at least one more photo of my son with a book in his hands.

I chose to work with the March Kraft+ Challenge. It featured a sketch and asked for the use of something with a bit of glimmer. My initial thought for the sketch was to use strips of paper. However, the patterns I had on hand didn't read well as small strips and I didn't have time to search my supplies. Instead, I pulled out my sewing machine and stitched a textured background. It was just what I needed and the layout came together quickly.

I am pretty pleased with my scrapbooking endeavors this month. Along with my usual design team projects, I managed to create and share a few pages for challenges and just for the fun of it.I made use of new kit clubs products as well as kitting then using up older supplies. I managed to beat my personal Calvinball goal, all the while having fun and doing what I love best: memory keeping.

The month may be almost over but you still have time to share a final project. The only question is who you might share that project with. If you are really short on time, don't worry. New challenges have and are being posted for April.

Scrapbook challenges will take submissions for March until midnight tonight. The first April challenge will post on April, 6th.

Game On! An Update on Calvinball

There are still a few days left to play Calvinball at Get It Scrapped. I might not be at the top of the points board, but I am very happy with my progress. Twenty pages made so far with 138.5 total points( this includes the bonus points). I might even have a page or two ready to post for more points over the next few days.

I finished all of the layouts and project for my design teams earlier this week. This left me time to play around with a few challenges just for the fun of it. I had quite a long list of layouts that I wanted to make for those challenges, but given the time needed to home school my son, I had to narrow down my choices.I decided to focus my energy on some pages for the Paper Issues Crop. I submitted the above page for a chance to win a spot on their design team. I have another page in the works which  should be done by tomorrow. It's been nice to sit back, relax and just scrap for fun.

Crafting with Teens, Calvinball and a Power Outage

Last weekend, we experienced a 32 hour power outage. Power outages aren't uncommon in the Bahamas. Usually, they last a few hours and then the power comes back on. This time, though, there was a huge fire in a substation which caused extensive damage. We don't have a generator so we just had to make the best of it. Last year, I had intended to do a few crafts for Fall and Winter. Needless to sat, they never got done. What better time than a power outage to get those crafts finished and earn a few bonus Calvinball points!

The first craft was easy. Super easy. I decided it was only worth half a point. My son and I chose this craft mainly on account of the fact that it was an owl and there were two of them in the package. We love owls.I figure we can incorporate them into our Fall decor somehow.

The second craft is a snow globe. Two of them to be exact. They are from the JBS Mercantile crafted kits.  Sadly, this particular kit is sold out. Ideally there is one here to keep and one to give away. We did follow the instructions, but it would seem our trees are too tall for these jars. I think I can solve this issue by simply getting bigger jars. I had a great time making these with my son. I plan to keep the one he made for our winter decor. It will officially be the first ever piece of winter decorations for our house. I have always intended to decorate for winter but never get around to it.


There is just another week or so left of Calvinball. I am moving steadily upward though not anywhere near the lead. That's ok. I did manage to beat my personal goal and the number of points I accrued last year. It's also been a ton of fun! We are already talking about laying another game( Donkey Kong-Scrapbook Style) next month.

CalvinBall 2015: Week One Update

This post may seem a bit confusing if you aren't familiar with Calvinball. It's a game we are playing over at Get It Scrapped. Head over to this post to get acquainted with the game.

I guess you could say I am starting off a bit light on the Calvinball points this year. The leaderboard has been hopping with many players posting quick stats and coming quite strong out of the gate. I may not be the winner, but I am pretty confident that I will break my point total for last year, at the least. Who knows? I could maybe come from behind and at least end up in the running. I have a few layouts I have yet to post, but will be adding in the points when I do. I am kind of weird like that. I could post the points now as the layouts are finished. However, I get confused keeping up with the points tally unless I can actually see what I posted in the Calvinball gallery.

My strategy for Calvinball this year was to save as many DT projects as I could to create during the Calvinball challenge. Many of these will be posting here and to the main MSE page throughout the month. I also intend to participate in as many challenges as I can. It's all about making those pages and challenges provide an easy stepping stone from which to start. One of the first challenges I chose for this month is the the Paper Issues Saturday  Sketch Challenge. It posted yesterday and seeing as how I had some time on my hands, I busted out the remnants of a few kits and whipped up this next layout.

The original sketch called for a very structured grid. Many of the photos I had were different sizes. So I opted to make my grid a bit crazy with photos and embellishments breaking many of the grid lines. It creates a diagonal flow across the page lending to the fun of the story. Some of the heart elements came from the Cocoa Daisy Day in the Life kits. I am trying to use more pocket page cards on layouts which means allowing myself the freedom to cut cards apart. Otherwise, I have a tendency to hoard them in card form.

Though one week has passed, you can still join in and play Calvinball with us. The rules are always changing which means the lead can end up belong to anyone...even a new comer.

Scrapbook Challenges- Break out your Maps!

Initially, I took this challenge quite literally. When I saw the maps shown in the sample patterns for Scrapbook Challenges latest pattern challenge, I immediately thought that I just had to have patterned paper with a map of the world on it. I do have some. I just had no clue which piece to use or what story I wanted to tell. Confused, I set about exploring my kit bag of travel products. There was sure to be more map related pieces in there.

I did find a few other map related pieces of paper and embellishments. I have maps of bus routes. Maps of cities. Even chipboard pieces with partial maps adorning them. There was no need to use a paper that encompassed the whole globe on one sheet. I could take things down to street level. I remembered that I wanted to document how we traveled around the city of San Juan when we visited Puerto Rico a few years back. Maps of  the street variety were perfect.

This map print isn't highly detailed, but it is just enough to add to the overall theme of the layout. Arrows and geotags are great motifs to use throughout the page. Consider motifs or colors that will accent the topic. I associate Puerto Rico with bright colors and beautiful flowers. I chose to use both on my layout.

Other Ideas for Map Pages:

-Map pages are often used to tell tales of travel. You could also use one to document how someone means the world to you. Or perhaps you have dreams of traveling to specific places.
-Document your neighborhood using a map. Have your child draw a map of your town or neighborhood.You can even print maps from Google Maps to use directly on your layout. Print a map for your PL pages and draw lines to indicate commonly used routes. ( note- a page like this may contain a lot of detail about where you currently live. You may not wish to post something like this online for safety purposes.)
-Create a treasure map for your children and go on a treasure hunt together. Your kids will have a blast, you will get some great photos and you will have a ready made map to use on your page.
- Use maps from zoo outings, museums or other fun trips directly on your page.
- Use a map to document your goals for the future.
- Document your current vehicle using map themed products.

Game On! with Scrapbook Challenges and Calvinball

It's the first Monday of the month which means a brand new sketch from Scrapbook Challenges. It also means I am on day two of Calvinball. Now, most times, I try to get DT work done fairly well ahead of time. This time,  I might just have saved a few assignments to complete a bit closer to the deadline. Why you ask? Well, obviously for the points. More importantly, they give me quick inspiration for my pages. If you need a little quick inspiration for some Calvinball pages, look no further than Scrapbook Challenges.

The wonderful thing about Scrapbook Challenges is that there will be challenges posted throughout the month. You can create a layout, get a point for Calvinball and submit your layouts to the Scrapbook Challenges blog for their monthly prize drawing. It's a win-win scenario! I had been looking for a way to use this water color paper in a layout. Using a pattern like this can be tricky if you don't want to cover certain parts of the design. SBC sketch #430 allowed me to place most of my pictures and page elements to one side which left the parts of the patterned paper I liked best visible. I used just two photos instead of the recommended four photos in the sketch. This made my page feel a bit unbalanced. To put the weight of the page back in my favor, I moved the journaling to the right side of the ribbon. I also scattered vellum hearts( barely visible) along with silver sequins in a zig zag throughout the left side.These help form a sort of column that balances out the page.

The DigiScrap Geek Podcast- Episode 21 and Calvinball Prepping

Calvinball begins tomorrow! What exactly is Calvinball you ask? It's a game we are playing throughout the month of March over in the Get It Scrapped forum. We're big fans of Get It Scrapped on the Digiscrap Geek Podcast. It's where many of us learned design principles, how to embrace our style, and most importantly, it's where we all became friends. Frankly, if I had never ventured over to Get It Scrapped, I might never have met my lovely co-hosts and this Podcast might never have happened.

 On the latest episode of the DigiScrapGeek Podcast, we talked with Debbie Hodge, owner and creator of Get It Scrapped. We covered quite a few topics, including Calvinball. I was asked whether or not I would ever go full digi. To hear the answer, you will need to listen to the show!

Meanwhile, I am spending my last hours before March prepping for the Calvinball shenanigans. It's going to be crazy fun. Game On! A Winter Lift me Up

Many people know there are scrapbook challenges to inspire us, but did you know there were games too? I recently participated in one of my favorites. Americans will recognize that this game is based off of Telephone. Some of my friends from UK may recognize it as Chinese Whispers. Essentially, you start off with one layout. The next person must scraplift it then pass her page onward. And then the next person scraplifts that page and, well, you get the picture. No one reveals their layout until the end of the game. When everyone has finished their pages,the hostess puts the layouts in order so that we can all view the progression of change that occurs in the design. The bigger the group of participants, the more likely the last layout may look drastically different than the first.

Since I was playing a game at Cocoa Daisy, I chose to work with my January kit. I am still loving it, though not much is left. This is my 7th layout from that kit! Despite the fact that the kit is packed with supplies, I have really been working hard to extend it as far as possible.

I am looking forward to playing more scrapbook games. They are a fun way to use your stash of supplies and connect with other memory keepers. Currently, I am gearing up to play Calvinball over at Get It Scrapped. The game starts on March 1st. Calvinball Update: Layouts going in Albums

Lately, I have been in an organizing mood. Though I have still been busy scrapbooking, I have taken the time to really get my creative space in shape. Part of that ( which also counts as points in Calvinball) is to get layouts into albums.

As I was putting layouts away, I came across one I wanted to share. I love the photo but I also love how frugal I was in the making of this particular layout.

I used one of my budget scrapbooking methods to create the canvas from one sheet of patterned paper. I also embellished using mostly items that were fussy cut from patterned paper. I used a closure from an envelope. I liked the blue color and it had fallen off the envelope intact. A quick layout on a budget is always a good thing.






As far as calvinball is concerned, I am lagging way behind. That's ok. It's all in fun and I think I have beaten some of my prior stats. Game On! Count on it!

It's been a lovely weekend spent with my family. I have found  a lot of time to craft as well. I have several creative team project to work on, but I found a little time just to play around with some of my supplies. After all, creativity is one of those things just grows exponentially.

I am tackling another Centipede Challenge today...use a new technique. I have for a long time seen embossing and resist techniques. However, for some reason, I just never use them. On Friday, I read fellow SNR staffer Marjolaine Walker's blog post in which she laid down a very easy resist technique using chipboard and I thought  I should give it a go.

I used the large piece of chipboard from this month's JBS Mercantile Artisan add on kit. The kit also came with a large package of vellum bags. I decided to gently pull the bag apart and cut it in half. It makes for some unusually large banners, especially when you add a bit of Jenni's washi tape to the top. I also used one of my new favorite punches to create an extra pinwheel for the bottom corner.

Here is a close up of the background stamps. I used the Club Scrap stamps to create the base layer, then stamped with versamark ink and the JBS Mercantile stamp. The clear embossing powder helps create the resist effect adding a subtle pattern to the background.








Overall, this layout is quite a bit different from my usual composition. When I first had received my kit, I didn't know what I would do with the large piece of chipboard. It created a very nice matter for my photos, especially after I dressed it with paint, stamps, ink and embossing powder.

Game On! Planted

Spring is beckoning and so it would seem, are the requests for layouts about growing plants and gardening. It's just not something I do. I have never had a green thumb unless I had green ink or paint on it. I did however, come across some older photos of my son during one of our homeschool cooperative classes. They should do the trick!

With photos in hand, I set out to cross off a couple of the Centipede challenges issued by Doris over at the JBS Mercantile Community. First and foremost, I decided to check off the challenge for book papers and stamping. I found a plant book page inside the Magpie kit and I also printed off a damask style pattern from the Haven Kit. Believe it or not, but that piece of damask paper you see on this layout was only printed to a 4x6 size. I cut it apart and simply tucked it under the photos.



The ribbon was a little too wide. I cut it in half which gives it a  more rugged look. Don't be afraid to cut apart your supplies. It's always ok to alter them to fit your project.

JBS Mercantile papers often work well with each other. I mixed in some of the new Modern Mercantile.  I did experiment a bit with a JBS Mercantile stencil and some Spiced Tin ink. I don't think I did the stencil justice, as most of the butterflies were covered with my photos and patterned paper.

I seem to be less heavy handed with  my embellishing this week. In this case, I felt like the bold metallic green and gold accents were more than enough.  It was very hard to match the German Foil daisies. I used some Heidi Swapp Color Shine in mint green to paint the wooden letters. I used portions of the Wheat Flower stamp with gold embossing powder to add some details.The gold embossing powder and lovely German Foil met my own challenge to add something shiny to your project.
