Quick and Easy Scrapbook Layouts Featuring 3 Photos

Embracing a Little Wonkiness

Today, I have another sketch over at the Scrapbook News and Review blog. I based it on a layout I did for a JBS Mercantile challenge earlier this year. The challenge was all about creating grids. If you have read my blog before, you know I have a serious grid making problem. All of my grids tend to be a bit wonky. Neither rulers nor templates seem to help me. Regardless, I still choose to make grid based layouts some of the time.

Breaking our of your comfort zone from time to time is good for you. It adds a little variety and interest while allowing you to play with new skills. Even though I know this layout is a bit wonky, I still love it.I think the photos of my son are wonderful and I love the textured elements on the layout. It definitely has a homemade and fun feel.


In this case, the layout came first and the sketch came later. However, I often use a sketch when I am breaking from my comfort zone. Having a sketch takes out one part of the planning process. It allows you to focus on the skills that are new to you or that you don't use regularly. You might also want to choose to work from a kit. Having a set of supplies that coordinate helps reduce your decision making time, once again allowing you to spend more time experimenting outside your comfort zone.

Stepping outside your comfort zone can be as simple as choosing a design form that you don't do well. It can also involve trying new techniques. Whatever it involves, just have fun with it. Embrace any little imperfections and enjoy the process.

A New Endeavor: Sketches

This year, I embarked on a challenge to myself. I wanted to try more new things and stretch out of my comfort zone. Drawing my own sketches fell within both of those categories.I had never given much thought to drawing my own sketches or even trying to create a sketch in Photoshop.

A short time ago, I saw a tutorial in Scrapbook News and Review Magazine. Katherine Hansen broke down the steps of creating your own sketches in photoshop from layouts you had already created. It really made sense to me. I can work backwards from my own layouts. I played and experimented. Kat gave me a few tips here or there, and the next thing I knew, I had made a sketch.

My first ever sketch debuted on the Scrapbook News and Review blog today as their sketch of the week.  I welcome you to stop by the SNR blog to check out the fabulous projects the design team came up with based on the sketch. It might be my first, but it won't be the last. making sketches is far easier than I imagined. I have more sketches to reveal in the coming months.

My First Sketch!

I never thought I would be one to draw my own sketch. Yet, here was a challenge that required me to do just that! At first, I was really intimidated. Finally, I just decided to slide the photos around on the page and then work from there. This worked well for me as I began to see ideas form while sliding the photos around. I finally settled on a design and then sketched what I had made.

I used my cricut to cut the title with "a red bucket" font. The journal spot is K and Company. I tore a cs border, used an old fiskars border punch on another shade of green, then added some ek success fiber. I fussy cut some K and Co. scalloped pp from the recycle green grass matte stack. I then added a cloud 9 design baby boy stitched sparkle sticker. I fussy cut the green flower from the DCWV all dressed up stack and added a brad. The little green flowers were part of a ribbon strip I got in a rak. I cut them apart and added a green pearl to each. I stamped dots with green moss colorbox ink and a pencil eraser.

I am really happy with how this turned out and now I think I can draw a sketch almost any time I would like to. To try your hand at this challenge, pop on over to Sketches for you.

With All My Heart....finally

Thirteen years ago this Fall, I married the most wonderful man. I have been so in love with my husband from the first day I met him. Yet, I have not scrapped ANY of our wedding until today. I started scrapbooking when my son was a little over a year old. I was first introduced to the hobby at a Creative Memories party. With all of the photos of my son, I never got to go back to my wedding album. So, when a few months ago, I mentioned to a Friend that I was going to scrap some photos of her wedding, she jokingly said I shouldn't until I had finished my own. So, I made it a goal of mine to get to work on my wedding album.

I chose to use Basic Grey Porcelain. I spritzed a little meadow glimmer mist on the cardstock, just to give it a little separation from the mat. I fussy cut the mat and then traced Heidi Swap heart mirrors. i wanted a border of hearts, but I felt they should all match the shape of the heart mirrors. A little cat's eye ink around the edges of the hearts added a finished look. I cut the title from a K and company vellum quotes stack. To make it more special, I used diamond and fruit punch stickles. I chose to stitch the fluorish in ecru floss, so I would not draw attention away from the photo.

Summer kick off Blog hop at PPC

I love a blog hop(who doesn't) and I love a color challenge. So I decided to participate in Picture perfect creations summer blog hop. I used Sketch 204 from Scrapbook challenges.

I loved how the color palette from PPC complemented the photos of DH and DS playing at an outdoor restaurant. We often go to the Green parrot. It's a little hole in the wall place, but it has good food and the harbour views are amazing. Not to mention that the sea breezes are great on a warm summer day.

I added a green feather from an actual green parrot. Now in reality, there are no live green parrot's at this restaurant.However, there are green parrot's in the Bahamas...and that is where this feather came from. I figured it was the perfect touch. I did clean the feather before placing it in the layout by gently wiping it down with a baby wipe. One must be careful with bird feathers as they might harbour small bugs or other unpleasant germs. In cleaning the feather, you must also be quite gentle so you don't pull it apart.

I cut the title on my cricut with the CK Jolly elf font.
