Tales of a Craft Class Junkie: My December Story, 2013- finished

Last November, I set out to work on a project that would document the whole month of December. The class was called Your December Story. It's comprised of a series of prompts, both for journaling and visual storytelling. It's not a December Daily which was perfect for me. I wanted something easy that I knew I would complete. Most of the layouts were finished by January. All except for two which I just finished today. I have to say that I find this very fulfilling. This is the first December in which I have managed to document all of the events that took place.

My introduction to my December story actually began in November. Prompts from the class had me searching for the first signs of Christmas to appear. I purposefully tinted the photos to help convey the changes. I started with black and white photos of our living room prior to decorations. I then moved to a vintage tint which keeps the color muted while showing the very first decorations we had observed this year.

Page two documents where we would be spending Christmas, current events, holiday wishes and our first holiday treat purchases. Now that I am thinking of the holidays, I have switched to brighter patterned papers and supplies.

Page three was dedicated to Holiday Decorations we observed around town. These included holiday murals and a variety of Christmas trees.

Page four documents the process of decorating our home. It also allows me some space to write about how this Christmas is different than past years.

There isn't much to do around the holidays where we live. To make things more special, we ate out every weekend which was a real treat for us.

Page six documents other holiday treats such as a trip to the movies, hot cocoa, sampling new candy and receiving a gift certificate from my husband's job. All little things to help make our December Merry.

Page seven documents typical everyday events that would have been documented in my monthly pocket page spreads. This includes the weather and what our cats were up to. I also did a recap of what I liked and didn't like about 2013.

Christmas Day fit entirely onto one layout. For whatever reason, I didn't have a lot of great photos of my son opening his gifts. Documenting it in PL style allowed me to highlight the full story with just a few photos.

Page nine could have been a layout. However, with the large number of boat photos from the nighttime Christmas parade, I felt pocket pages would suit it better. I strayed away from the holiday paper to include a constellation print. Perfect for a nighttime photo shoot.

Page ten could have also been a full 12x12 layout. However, I needed a back side to page nine so I made it into a pocket page instead. This page documents how we made a rice krispy treat holiday train.

Once again, I find myself liking some of the pocket pages and others not so much. What I did like was using the Your December Story class to document my Christmas. I was able to include so many details both large and small about the things that happened throughout the month. I also didn't have the stress of doing a Decemeber Daily. I didn't use all of the prompts. Some were a bit difficult for our small family of three. However, I did find that many of the prompts guided me into finding additional stories that may not have been told. I plan to use Your December Story again in 2014.

Project Life and Gratitude, Part Two

Last November, I shared the beginnings of my Gratitude project. I worked it into my Project Life spreads and I loved the results. I finished the project, but I recently realized that I had neglected to share them here.

I managed to capture a picture of a rat last November. That might seem odd to some, but rats are kind of like squirrels here. They aren't something I encountered while living in Florida. This particular pest came sneaking out to steal bread from the ducks we were feeding at the edge of the pond.

This page is the companion to the one above it. I wanted to capture some of the sights on our daily walks around the island.

On Black Friday, I spent the day cropping with friends. I wanted to document that, but I also wanted to document the many times I worked Black Friday when I was in retail management. It's not somethign that I miss. Some of my wildlife pages overflowed to this spread, but I am ok with that. I also documented our unseasonably warm weather.

During the month of November, my husband took me out to eat quite  a bit. One of my favorite spots was Mosaic. I thought this patterned paper was perfect for this spread.

I used the back of the mosaic print paper for some random photos. Since we had purchased our car 5 years ago in November, I wanted to document the odometer. Our mileage would be quite a lot more if we were still living in Florida.

Instead of making separate pages for each part of our Thanksgiving day, I used pocket pages to document what we cooked. There is an accompanying 12x12 layout of our main course.

I enjoyed the gratitude project quite a bit. I have decided to add it into my everyday PL spreads. After all, we should find something to be thankful for every day. I find I have a lot of things to be grateful for. How about you?

Get It Scrapped: Current Culture Meets Projects Life

As Memory Keepers, we want to include anything and everything we can to give a snapshot of our world right now. Round-ups are fabulous ways to create a quick summary of news and events. With so much going on, it's important to include only those things that really strike a cord with you and your family.

Video Games 2013 by Christy Strickler |Supplies Patterned Paper: Die Cuts with a View; Letters: Jenni Bowlin, Kelly Purkey; Jorunal cards, Die Cuts: Becky Higgins for Project Life; Rub-Ons: KaiserCraft; Flair: BlueBirdChic.com; Wood Veneer: Studio Calico; Paper Clip: Maya Road; Enamel Dots: My Mind’s Eye, this layout was created for Get It Scrapped

Video Games are important to my family. We all play them together and are always on the lookout for the latest news about upcoming games. It made sense for me to document important video game news for 2013.

I chose to create a 12x12 layout. I used Project Life cards to help create the layout, but I could have easily documented this with pocket pages. Regardless of the size of the layout, I will be adding it to my Project life spreads.

Round-ups are excellent additions to Project Life. You can keep a running list of books you are reading, TV shows you are watching, gas prices...really almost anything current makes for a great round up. Consider keeping a notebook with lists of personal trends and news that interest you. When you are ready, transfer the list to a layout or Project Life card.

Project Life and Gratitude

Perhaps it's the change of the seasons that inspires so many people to be grateful this time of year. In some places Autumn has danced into view and you can not miss her colorful display. Where I live, she tiptoes and you must pay careful attention or you will miss her presence. Regardless of Autumn's chosen display, wherever you live, you are likely conscience of the changes. The difference in the weather seems to have us reflecting on the past year, almost ready to move on, but pausing to savor the good memories.

This year, I had a lot of good memories to savor. Twenty years worth to be exact. I began this month celebrating my marriage and grateful for all the wonderful moments with my husband. It seemed like the perfect time to start a gratitude journal. In the past, I have considered such a project, however, I always knew I would not finish it. Adding on additional projects to those already in progress makes them very difficult to complete. My solution was to incorporate the gratitude journal within my regular Project Life pages.

I started by gathering my supplies. When it comes to scrapbooking products, I often go a bit overboard. So I ended up with a pretty large kit. I will be using the JBS Mercantile October and November kits. They mix easily with the supplies I have on hand.

I really want to start making more of older supplies. I find that the easiest way for the older items to feel new again is to mix them with a few newish supplies. I have a variety of older products from Bella Blvd. and Simple Stories. The Fall Theme Set of Project Life cards made a nice addition to this kit.

The Echo Park Oh So Thankful kit included the page protectors. It will pair well with Jenni Bowlin Studios Fall Bingo cards and the JBS Mercantile November mini album kit printables. I also added in a small plastic flower sign that said Happy Thanksgiving. The Echo Park papers have a more trendy feel. I will be able to mix them with the more traditional kit items by using the Navy and Orange colors throughout the pages.

It's a little unusual for me to work on my Project Life album during the month. Usually, I am revisiting months, jumping around to use the photos that I find inspiring at the time.I did find that I enjoyed switching the process up a little. Perhaps that may be key to me for participating more fully in Project Life.

While I did have two full kits centered around Autumn and Thankful themes, I still chose to add some additional items. I was able to use up some scrap ribbon and I incorporated some of the October Freckled Fawn Oh Deer Me kit embellishments. Using some of the regular Project Life cards also afforded me some flexibility.

I alternated between documenting the events that occurred and journaling about my gratitude.

Adding the gratitude journaling to the event portions of each part of the day allowed me to add a more refreshing perspective to the layouts.

Day one managed to spread out over three pages. Incorporating the gratitude project into my Project Life spreads is making it more doable. I know I never would have completed two separate projects. I am using my kits but also allowing myself to add small bits from my supplies. Overall, I am more satisfied with the way the cards look. There is variation but sticking to a color scheme is helping me achieve a more consistent look. Adding the gratitude project to Project Life is also inspiring me with it's fresh perspective. It leads me to believe that the key for me  to complete PL spreads lies within the consistency of a kit paired with varying how I approach PL each month. Adding new projects will help me add a fresh perspective while keeping PL from becoming a chore.
